On April 17th, we welcomed our long-awaited guest speaker -- writer, political activist and professor at City College -- Jim Miller. Jim is a co-author of Under the Perfect Sun: The San Diego Tourists Never See and the author of two novels taking place in San Diego: Flash and Drift. We were wise to book Jim long in advance and our patience paid off. In an electrifying presentation, he talked about the history of American labor and the relation between the decline of workers' unions and the growth of economic inequality. With so many bright people in class, bringing experiences and perspectives from all around the world, the talk was followed by many great questions, which to the last minute kept our speaker on his toes.
Just the day before, we slipped into business casual attire and marched off to the Job Fair organized bi-annually by the Mesa College Career Center. Equipped with beautiful resumes and having practiced the Tell Me a Little About Yourself question ahead of time in class, the students had no problem talking to the employers. Two weeks later, they are still reporting the calls, emails, and job interviews they received after the fair.
